PTV Summer League Outdoor Rules

General Rules

  1. Set-up starts at 5:45 PM. Warm-ups start at 6 PM. Games begin at 6:15 PM. All teams are expected to help set-up and take-down equipment.
  2. Each team will be expected to provide a scorekeeper for 2 games.
  3. All matches shall be to 21 points, win by 2, cap at 25 points using RALLY scoring. Teams switch sides after every 7 points.
  4. A team shall consist of a maximum of 4 players and a minimum of 3 players. Only 2 males are allowed on the court at any one time.
  5. No rotation is required. The service order must be maintained during a game. If a service order error is made the penalty is loss of rally.
  6. Substitutions are not permitted during the game.
  7. Disagreements and rule discussions should be handled by the captains. If disagreement can’t be settled, replay the point.
  8. Call your own violations and call your team’s violations. Please don’t call another team’s violations. If there is an issue with non-calls, please speak to the opposing team’s captain.
  9. No subs allowed during playoffs. All players must be on team’s roster.
  10. Forfeiting – If your team cannot make it to a league night, you must notify the League Director by 1pm on Tuesday so that schedules can be adjusted. Failure to notify the League Director of a forfeit by 1pm on the day of play will result in being dropped from the league after the second offense. Forfeiting teams will take one loss to each team they were scheduled to play.

 

Rules of Play

  1. The service must be from anywhere behind the back court line. If a tossed ball is not struck or caught but lands on the GROUND it is considered a service and no additional attempts are allowed.
  2. The serve touching the net as it goes over is a legal serve.
  3. Touching the net, poles and support lines is considered a foul. Incidental tripping on the boundary lines is not a fault.
  4. A ball touching any part of a boundary line is considered “in”.
  5. There is no center-line violation. You may go under the as long as there is no interference with the opponent, however this is discouraged and dangerous.
  6. A blocking contact is NOT counted as a team contact.
  7. Blocking/Spiking the serve at the net is not legal.
  8. Open handed tips are not allowed. Ball must be cleanly hit or “pop” off the hand. Roll shots are ok.
  9. Players cannot receive a serve, free ball or roll shot with open hands that involves finger action (ie. setting).
  10. A hard-driven attack (downward trajectory) may be defensively played in any manner, as long as the action is not a lift (i.e. double hits allowed, including actions with open hands/fingers).
  11. An off-speed hit or bump (with upward or downward trajectory) cannot be set and if played with both hands the hands must be contacting.
  12. When using a setting motion to send the ball into the opponent’s court it must be released in the direction in which the shoulders of the player are facing either front or back. Side-setting is allowed when attempting to set your partner.
  13. The server’s teammate must not prevent the opponents, through screening, from seeing the server or the path of the ball. On an opponent’s request, a player must move sideways, bend over or bend down.
  14. A set ball may not spin more than 2 rotations.

 

Additional Reverse Coed Rules

  1. A male player may attack hit a ball that is completely above the net from behind the 10 ft line. His feet must be completely behind the 10 foot line (or last touched the ground completely behind the 10 foot line).
  2. A male player may attack the ball from within the 10 ft line when the ball is partially below the height of the net. Any attack hits above the net will be considered a fault.
  3. A female player may attack hit from anywhere.
  4. Male players may not participate in a block.
  5. Female players may reach over the net to BLOCK an opponent’s “hit” as long as she does not touch the top tape of the net and does not interfere with or block an opponent’s “set”.
